The company was established by Dr. Y.P. Ranade (1935-2001) in the year 1968.

He started his career in defense services. His keen interest in the business of education led him to take early retirement and start his own publishing house to provide textbooks and children's books for schools. He specialized in the production of books in different local dialects of various regions. His contribution to educational publishing has been acknowledged with several awards.

His business styled as SCHOLAR / SCHOLAR PUBLISHING HOUSE (P) LIMITED has been widely acclaimed as a publisher of repute right from its inception. Gradually, this business house started producing books for secondary and senior secondary students to guide the future generation of the country in the best possible manner. His main desire was that the books should be authored by eminent intellectuals and produced in the best possible manner. This way he has contributed immensely to the promotion of quality publishing and book culture in India. The SCHOLAR publishes books in many languages i.e. English, Hindi, Punjabi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Mizo, Hmar, Kuki, Manipuri and Assamese. A number of textbooks have been prescribed by the different State Governments as Text Books and have been awarded for meritorious publication.

By sheer dint of his untiring and selfless service, he has been instrumental in establishing the organization called 'Federation of Educational Publishers in India (FEPI)' of which he was Secretary General and President for many years. It was through his able leadership and effective functioning that the FEPI become the umbrella organisation of all the prominent educational publishers of India. FEPI became instrumental in coordinating their activities in a cohesive and effective manner.

He successfully organized many Book Exhibitions and Book Fairs in collaboration with the other Federation of Educational Publishers of the country. Widely traveled as he was, it had been his constant desire to bring India's Publishing Trade on an equal footing with the world book market.

He had an accomplished career which included the following honours:

  • Chairman of Transport, Telephone, Railway & Postal -The Federation of India Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) 1984-1986.
  • Vice President in The federation of Publishers Book Sellers Association in India (FPBA) 1985-1986.

The noble soul in his pursuit of upgrading knowledge was martyred in Manipur (India) where he was undertaking a tour to promote Education.

His establishment as well as heirs are dedicated to carry on the unfinished noble work of Dr. Ranade and are committed to the motto "Upwards and Onwards". He brought in the concept of charitable education in the north-eastern states of India which were besotted with poverty and insecurity then; brining hope and direction through his leadership in this field, setting an example of himself in the process of achieving his educational goals.
